Not quite HD Quality, but great features

I was expecting better performance from the video. I didn't expect HD-DVD or Blu-ray quality, but I did expect better Standard DVD performance than my Toshiba HD-DVD player. My Toshiba HD-DVD (HD-D3) plays standard DVD about as well as the the OPPO. This is a little disappointing.
I got the Oppo for 2 reasons: great standard DVD quality and the ability to play VCD and a variety of other formats. The good news is, the Oppo will play anything, burned DVDs, AVI files, DIVX, Pictures burned to CD-R (this is not the case with the HD-DVD player). The player is responsive and good quality.
There is one feature I have to Rave about. The Oppo will remember the last spot you stopped a disc (up to the last 5 discs). I have a 2 year son and we often have to stop his discs in the middle for all sorts of reasons. Even if I eject the disc and play it later, the Oppo will remember where I left off. Also very good for the adults, because it's not often my wife and I get to see a movie all the way through in one sitting. Its a great feature for people who have kids.
All in all a great player. But a little pricey for a standard DVD player. It will not make your standard DVD look like HD. HD is in a different league.
Good quality product. Would only recommend if you need to play different formats and have an interest in the audio, as this player doubles as a fine CD player in a modest stereo system, especially with an out board DAC. Also has the ability to play music files via USB hard drive or flash drive stick. |
