Not ready for Prime Time

I received the Ewoo yesterday. After reading the instructions, I set it up and let the remote charge for a couple of hours. I then placed my iPod into the stand and waited about 10 minutes before I tried things out. The Ewoo remote is designed with an LCD screen built in and a scroll/button area that mimics the iPod screen and buttons. It's like having an iPod in your hands controlling the actual iPod in the Ewoo dock.
My first impressions were just OK, the remote felt "plasticy" but it's weight was good. I just wish they had put as much design time on the Ewoo as they did on the Ewoo's box, The box is a thing of beauty! There is a drawer you pull out, to get to the Ewoo, and as you do another drawer in the rear of the box also pulls out, it's rather cool.
Back to the Ewoo; I removed the remote from the base and pressed the center button, to wake it for operation. The screen lit with a little red dot at the top menu. I assumed this ment things wern't working, and after some fiddling with the remote I found I was correct. I couldn't get anything to function so I replaced the remote into the stand, pulled the iPod and replaced the ipod hoping to get things to syncup. The next time I pulled the remote things started to work...SORT OF. At least now when I used the remote I saw a green dot in the top menu!
So it was time to use it. The first thing I noted was the button and touch surface of the remote needs to be held for a short period of time for operation, you can't just press and go. You have to be very deliberate with the button/touch-surface when you select a function. Next I went through the remotes menu's and tried to select a "playlist". At first attempt I selected a playlist and the remote screen went back to the "music" category of the main menu. After about 3 times of this I tried the video option and POOF the video's on my iPod displayed! However, when I tried to select a specific video the unit would select a different video. I tried this several times but couldn't get the video I wanted too select and play. Even when I used the skip back function I would hit a certain video in the list and though there were others before it in the list, the remote wouldn't let me select them. Just no luck with this.
So back to the music menu. I tried again to get to the "Playlists", this time holding the selection button down for a longer period of time and BAM, there it was, my playlists. I scrolled down the list to select the playlist I wanted but the scroll was rather flakey. You sort of have to put your finger very flat onto the scroll area of the remote and move it fast, if you aren't quick enough you select the function your finger is near, like menu or skip forward, not the scroll function of the pad, it's VERY flakey. eventually I was able to get music to play, but it was more of an adventure each time I tried to select a song or a video. It was about a 60% shot that I would get things to work the first time. and like I noted sometimes I just couldn't select a video even though I could see it on the Ewoo's screen. So the problems ranged from getting the wrong selection, to the remote going to a different function then I expected.
From my experience I don't think it was just this remote, this seemed like a design flaw, but I could be wrong. Also, I did go to the Zicplay web site, makers of the Ewoo, and found that the firmware in my unit was up-to-date, so it wasn't a software issue; well at least there was no fix for the software issue. Perhaps it was just this one unit that was bad, but after my experience I won't be repurchasing a replacement Ewoo. Amazon is taking the return (I've had good purchase experiences with Amazon). I intend to try another brand of iPod remote device. I really wanted to like the Ewoo, it's a great idea, just not ready for PrimeTime. |
