♥♥♥♥♥ Another Slow Moving Alien Attacks!
Sometimes B-science fiction movies transcended themselves to achieve something higher or greater than that to which they inspired. Yes, greatness is sometimes inadvertent. But, when a cast, a story, and passing special effects come together, the effect can be a timeless classic. Of course, what I am describing is not this movie.

Keith Ritchie (Tony Huston) has become radio pals with Zontar, a friendly creature from Venus. Zontar has made Ritchie, who just reeks of geek, all sorts of promises about how great the world will become under his benevolent rule. Ritchie, who has a nagging, whiny wife named Martha (Susan Bjurman), is a skinny guy who looks like those old advertisements about the 98 pound weakling. But, by golly, Keith will show everyone that he has the power, courtesy of Zontar.

Zontar comes to earth by stealing a satellite to make his landing. The satellite looks suspiciously like a ball with a ring around it, but hey, it's a cheesy movie, so some allowances need to be made. I did wonder how Zontar made it all the way from Venus to earth orbit to steal the satellite, but I guess that is just another of those mysteries of science.

Once on earth, Zontar busily makes little bat-like flying critters that bite you on the neck and then make you their slave (seems like I have heard this somewhere before). Everything would be fine except Keith wants Dr. Curt Taylor (John Agar) to join him and Zontar in making the earth a wonderful place to live, and Dr. Taylor unreasonably wants things to stay more or less as they are. For some reason Dr. Taylor has a problem with being a slave to a creature that looks slimy and hides in a cave.

If you watch this movie with an open mind it becomes quite humorous. I enjoyed watching people running about mindlessly for no apparent reason. I also enjoyed sirens going off when the power was supposedly completely out. There is also at least one scene where cars are supposedly unable to run, but you see cars passing by in the distance through the trees. Another thing that was puzzling was how Keith managed to pass by a group of soldiers outside Zontar's cave without encountering the soldiers; just one of those mysteries of life.

Speaking of soldiers, early in this movie a general enslaved by Zontar sets a group of soldiers to walking about in the woods to look for suspicious activity. I see the point of sending the soldiers off to wander about aimlessly, but what is the point of returning to them several times in the movie? The soldiers never actually do anything, until they encounter Zontar and run for the hills, or back to the woods, or whatever.

Another bit of fun is the cheesy "laser" effect when Keith wields his "plutonium ruby crystal laser." Luke Skywalker eat your heart out!

On thing that did surprise me is the amount of death in this movie. I expect the slimy alien from Venus to kill somebody because that it what slimy Venusian monsters do. What I didn't expect is how many people got shot or strangled. I guess it is hard to have a slimy Venusian who struggles to walk to chase down humans and kill them, so the extra killing spiced up the movie.

As silly as this movie is, it is actually interesting to watch (but you really have to like cheesy science fiction movies). Once you have seen this one, try watching "It Conquered the World," which is better than this movie and is about a similar creature.
