Best No Mercy Event.
|
Lets be honest, No Mercy has gotten mixed reviews like most wrestling events. Even though the 99 & 00 were indeed good, they could have been better. The following No Mercys after 2002 went from decent to just plain bad. However, looking at the past this one was the best. Actually, it was one of the best of the Invasion storyline going on that year. Now to the matches:
The show starts off with a WCW Tag Team Championship match as The Hardy Boyz with Lita defend against Lance Storm & The Hurricane along with Ivory & Mighty Molly. This was a crazy fast paced tag team match that had everyone getting their moments and the crowd ate this one up. Solid opener.
Next would be a battle of big men as Kane takes on Test. This match was better than I expected. Kane is a monster and Test is a good heel. Nothing more than a high impact, "smash mouth" style matchup. The referee almost ruined this one but luckily Kane took care of him after the match.
The following match is for male viewers only as Torrie Wilson faces Stacy Keibler in the first ever Lingerie match. Some reviewers did not like this one because of the wrestling but who is really taking themselves seriously in this one.
I was excited to see this next match. Intercontinental Champion Christian defends his title against Edge in a Ladder Match. This one had some sick bumps and some high flying moments. It also featured some generic wrestling moves. Not better than RVD/Hardy at SummerSlam but still a great match to watch as it shows both men preparing to be main eventers.
WWF Tag Team Champions The Dudley Boyz defend against The Big Show & Tajiri in a filler matchup. Don't get me wrong, this is not a bad match at all and it did feature some great interference from Rhyno but this was just added to take some time.
The next match was a battle of veterans as The Undertaker battled Booker T. These two faced off at Judgment Day 2004 and this one was much better. The crowd was into it as well. Their styles mixed okay but these two knew what they were doing. As in added fact, this was Taker's best match of 2001 since Judgment Day against Stone Cold Steve Austin.
The next two main events are the main reason that this event is worth purshasing and I highly recommend to see.
The Rock defends his WCW Championship against Chris Jericho. The story around this match was "Can Y2J win the big one?". Perfect chemistry between the two resulted in an awesome storyline and an even better matchup. This was their first encounter and in my opinion, their best one. The Rock shows that he can wrestle and Jericho proves to everyone that he is a top player in the industry. Add a wild, mixed crowd and you have an electric battle that might surprise you with the ending.
And in the main event, Stone Cold Steve Austin defends his WWF Championship against Kurt Angle and Rob Van Dam in arguably the best main event in No Mercy history. As a matter fact, other than the one at Vengeance 2002, this was the best triple threat match ever. This had it all. Fast paced action, false finishes, interference from Vince and Shane McMahon, a wild crowd, proper time and a decisive ending. What else more can I say, this is a "FORGOTTEN CLASSIC".
Thats all I can say about this event. I was around during these days and man WWF puts all WWE PPVS now to shame. Highly recommended for the two main events alone but the rest of the card is top notch.
