A Great Movie, a Grim Story
|
I am a staunch admirer of John Huston, but the story inside this movie was too grim to bear. If you find yourself fascinated by the "plummeting spiral" of an irretrievable alcoholic in an exotic locale, please be my guest and enjoy this movie to the hilt, alongside "Leaving Las Vegas." I found this movie very painful to endure, because it had no catharsis and created no interest in the protagonist, caught as he is in closed loop of self-pity and self-loathing. Geoffrey Firmins can be found in almost any small town bar or big city skid row any night of the week; I'm not sure why anyone would want to watch such a life chronicled for almost two hours on their living room screen.
Perhaps I am not very humanistically sympathetic, but I thought that the stereotyped Mexican who shot Firmin would have been performing euthenasia if only he had shot him out of mercy rather than the small heartedness of a "native."
On the whole, I would rather clip my fingernails with a wire-cutter than to sit through this movie again. |
