♥♥♥♥♥ The continued animated adventures of Lum and her friends
"Urusei Yatsura: OVA 2: Raging Sherbet / I Howl At The Moon" constitutes Volume 2 of the OVA (original video animation) continuation of Japan's long-running "Urusei Yatsura" series based on Rumiko Takahashi's comic book about horny high-school boy Ataru and his live-in curvaceous alien "wife," Lum, of tiger-skin bikini fame. These two episodes, dating from 1988-89, were made after the successful TV series had finished its run and after the four popular UY movies had been released. They're essentially two sitcom episodes, 26 minutes each, and should entertain fans of the series although they're not nearly as inspired as the earlier Lum adventures. Ataru's oversexed nature is less of an issue here, making this subtitled tape wholly suitable for younger anime fans.

In "Raging Sherbet," Lum and Ataru take a back seat to the antics of Lum's alien girlfriends, particularly the ditzy, money-hungry Ran who is taken to the icy planet Neptune by the demure, no-nonsense kimono-clad Oyuki and introduced to a strange bird whose beak is a sherbet ice cream cone. When the cone-beak, filled with sherbet, is pulled out, another pops up in its place, making each bird a steady source of sherbet ice cream cones for Ran to exploit as she hopes to use one bird to make a lot of money during Tokyo's hot summer and convinces Oyuki to let her try it as a form of "test marketing." When the bird ultimately balks at all the work, it flees, forcing Ran, Lum and Benten to search for it before Oyuki learns of the mishap and unleashes her wrath.

In "I Howl at the Moon," Lum's attempt to make "sakura-mochi" cakes via computer for her beloved "Darling" (Ataru) results in disaster when she uses the wrong code and the resulting concoction turns Ataru into a werewolf. When Lum learns her mistake she finds that she has only a few hours to mix up the antidote and feed it to Ataru or he'll stay in wolf form forever. However, when Ataru finds that he enjoys being a werewolf, he eludes Lum with great skill as he pursues adoring college girls and the like, little knowing what will happen to him.

The first episode is amusing and fast-paced, but its focus on the other girls makes it the least interesting of the two. The second episode is funnier and more cleverly written and takes us back to the heart of the series' comic appeal, the peculiar romantic dynamic-and resulting culture clash-involved in Lum's persistent efforts to please the volatile, self-centered, unappreciative Ataru. AnimEigo, the tape's distributor, includes liner notes with the tape which explain a lot of the Japanese cultural references that may be missed by American viewers.
