DVD "making-of" goof
|
Behind-the-scenes making-of featurette contains the ridiculous claim that "Hollywood heavyweight" Anne Bancroft was seriously considered for role of washed-up actress ultimately played by Geraldine Page. In 1961 (when film was shot, although it wasn't released until following year), Anne Bancroft was nobody's idea of a "Hollywood heavyweight"--she'd appeared in a handful of B pictures, and was just then beginning to establish a serious film career by re-creating her stage role in movie version of The Miracle Worker (in which she beat out Page for that year's Oscar).
Then just 29 or 30, Bancroft was far too young to be even remotely credible as an aging sex symbol whose heyday was 15 or 20 years earlier. (Even Page, who was almost ten years older than Bancroft, had trouble making that part of role believable.)
Sure, Bancroft's name might have been tossed out on a whim at some point, as was that of Deborah Kerr (and, although unmentioned in DVD, a far more sensible choice like Ava Gardner, who reportedly turned role down). But to suggest that Bancroft was ever seriously considered is simply nuts. What? Hayley Mills was busy?
