Worse than the first, in more ways than one.

I hold a minority view on Episode 2.
The first prequel, "The Phantom Menace", was our first experience of the "new" Star Wars galaxy of the Old Republic, and of these new special effects; and it was Lucas' first time directing and really making a movie in many, many years. This, in a nut shell, is why I like Phantom Menace better.
See, I could let some of the horrible flaws of that film go. Lucas was "rusty" right? I bought that excuse. And it was so exciting seeing a new Star Wars movie with advanced special effects for the first time and seeing the Jedi Knights in their glory days, seeing all these new worlds, new characters, etc., etc... Although, Lucas is insane with computer generated effects.
(To this day, if you can build a set or build a model, for goodness sakes, go with real sets and actual models because they are physical and almost always look more real. Sorry, but cgi stuff is -even as of 2008- not close to being perfected. Don't believe that? Wait a few years and see. Meanwhile Kubrick's 2001, made in the 1960s, looks perfect.)
There was NO excuse for this next movie repeating mistakes made with the first one -- namely mistakes resulting from poor directing and inept story telling. In some ways this film is even more lacking than Episode 1. The dialog is horrendous, particularly between Anakin and Padme in what are supposed to be the romantic scenes. And again, the acting was stilted. Could elaborate, but not much point.
The movie should have been better because the director should have been better AND, and here is one more small thing -- this is the movie the Clone Wars begin! So he had a much better, more exciting story to work with. This is the story everyone was waiting for. You have Anakin and Kenobi together and romance with Padme, the Clone Wars, etc.. "Attack of the Clones" should have ROCKED like no other! Ya feel me? I'm talking "Empire Strikes Back" level glory. The space battle at the beginning of Episode _3_ is the kind of thing 2 needed more of. What was good in 2, there should have been way, WAY more of. Expectations were rightfully higher and mine just weren't met. Plus Episode 1 had Darth Maul in it. For just a few minutes but still.
That's just my 2 cents. |
