♥♥♥♥ Good movie, could have been GREAT.
At age 32, I just watched "The Sound of Music" for the first time over the past weekend. I never wanted to watch it when I was younger, because it just seemed silly. I was surprised by what a good movie it was. As good as it is, it is still flawed in several areas. Christopher Plummer (who knew he was such a hottie when he was young!!) made it clear that he did not like Julie Andrews, and did not like working on the film (even going so far as to call it "The Sound of Mucus"). This disdain is subtly evident in his performance as Capt. Von Trapp. Even though I knew from the description that the Capt. and Maria would eventually fall in love, I never saw it coming. He didn't even seem to like her, and she seemed to be only interested in the children. He seemed much more into the Baroness, he frequently smiled in her presence and enjoyed talking with her. There was no quiet, brooding desire built up between the Capt. and Maria, it was just - they don't like each other then bam, they're "hopelessly in love" and getting married. At just shy of 3 hours long, perhaps this movie should have been a bit longer, to give the supposed love between the Capt. and Maria a chance to begin and grow in front of the viewers eyes. Although I love a happy ending as much as anyone, it was just hard to believe. Maria is told that her unruly young charges have run off several previous governesses, however they only play two tricks on Maria then, with a little singing and bike-riding turn into golden children. Even with these few minor drawbacks, this is a new favorite movie of mine. Julie Andrews is flawless as Maria, and her enthusiasm is contagious!
