Splendid Little War

| A little surprising this one slipped through the cracks and became obscure. Surprising because it's both faithfully based on Phillip Caputo's legendary memoir, and, for a 1980 television production, it's a rather honest look at the war in Vietnam. The story follows Brad Davis from overachieving patriot who sees the war as a testing ground for manhood, to burned out shell, scarred for life. Indeed, the power of Caputo's work is its exploration of man's moral breakdown when faced with unrelenting death. Through Brad Davis' eyes, we see how the hypocrisy and arrogance of the American military leadership became as deadly as the Viet Cong. Davis' brooding, intense portrayal of Caputo is the soul of the film. The film does suffer from some expected issues: the TV medium restricts the use of graphic violence, and the budget limitations are obvious. However, it's a worthy contribution to the genre, and deserves a good DVD treatment. |
