| I picked up "Mooch Goes to Hollywood" for my younger brothers and sisters at a garage sale and soon found myself entirely taken by the suigeneris pup known as Mooch. While ten minutes into the film I knew it was not a children's picture, I was sure it was a great one. After watching it, you will no doubt ask yourself the same question I did: How did they get so many big stars casted for such a bizzar and low budget piece? After all, Ja Ja Gabor is narrating it, and Vincent Price has a main part. The cover prowdly advertises starring roles of Phyllis Diller, Jim Backus and Marty Allen(believe me, there are more.)I think you would have to ask the actors themselves, most dead already. The subject matter is deliciously bawdy sometimes, considering what audience they claim to cater to: there are a plethera of strip club jokes, ambiguous drug references and other ribald quips by Gabor which seem obvious to a viewer over 9. Certainly, this story of a Dog set to star in Hollywood should be more of a cult classic. It is a strange brew of late 60s culture and early 60s ideals that make great fun |
