The last volume in a 10 part series of Mr. Magoo cartoons
|
| Mr. Magoo was a clumsy, crusty, incredibly nearsighted, loveable old coot who first appeared in the 1949 UPA short "Ragtime Bear." Memorably voiced by Jim Backus (a.k.a. Thurston Howell, III on "Gilligan's Island"), Mr. Magoo cartoons twice won the Academy Award for Best Short Subject: in 1954 for "When Magoo Flew" and in 1956 for "Magoo's Puddle Jumper." When UPA was bought out at the end of the Fifties, 130 cheaply made-for-TV cartoons were produced for syndication, the first of which appeared on November 7, 1960. Magoo's character was considerably softened for the TV shorts, which each ran five minutes, and the nearly blind little man was joined by a supporting cast that included his nephew Waldo (who was featured in the theatrical shorts), Mother Magoo, and Millie. This tenth volume of syndicated cartoons from this period offers up five more episodes: "Skipper Magoo," "Private Eye Magoo," "Muscles Magoo," "What's Zoo Magoo," and "Digger Magoo." In terms of quality these efforts certainly do not compare to the wonderful "Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol" (1962), which heralded the character's revitalization. This series of 10 volumes of syndicated episodes are clearly for those with fond memories of Mr. Magoo and Backus's wonderful vocal work, because these are not the cartoons featuring the character which are likely to win over a new generation of fans. |
