Cabin fever (with decent cuisine)

I give this 2 stars only because it has music by the excellent Steve Tibbetts, and some nice scenery.
For most of the first part of the film, however, you're stuck in a small cabin with 3 people you don't especially like or care about. Surely this violates a basic rule of all fiction: make the audience care about the characters before everything else.
From the reviews here, I learned that there was no script. I would have guessed that a lot of it was improvised, but that there was at least an outline. Maybe the lack of script contributes to the 2-dimensional quality of the characters.
The film does at least progress toward some predictable and unpredictable climaxes. It's not aimless. But there's nothing that shocking about what happens, because the shock should involve the psychology of the characters. Since there isn't much depth here, there's not much to affect you.
Notice that the good music by Tibbetts is somewhat detached from the rest of the film, as if no-one could decide what the tone of the film really was to begin with.
Mostly, it's a boring evening with some yuppies. |
