These super heroines don't give a hoot what happens next!

Hyper Doll is based on a manga of the same name. To the best of my knowledge, only two volumes have been animated.
As the OAV starts, we are dropped right into the middle of what appears to be a routine scenario (i.e. monsters stomping through town, two girls transforming into superhero mode and defeating them). No explanation is given with regards to the origin of the Hyper Dolls, or their boss who has a disconcerting habit of communicating through a pizza (basically a hologram of him just pops up from a pizza).
HD seems to be a parody of magical girl anime like Sailormoon. The emphasis is purely on humor, as there isn't a serious minute throughout. While worth a chuckle or two, HD is only mildly amusing. The comedy parts of Sailormoon are much funnier. The girls' nonchalant attitude towards fighting monsters rob the show of any sense of excitement, adventure, or danger. Since they are entirely unconcerned about the outcome of their battles, it is hard for the audience to work up much of an interest as well. The anime art isn't bad, but nothing to write home about either. The girls are cute at best. I have read elsewhere that the US release by Pioneer features funny live action clips with live actors which is unusual. The version I watched, however, doesn't have any extras. I would have liked to see that, as the anime itself is generally a waste of time and money. If they don't care, why should we? |
