♥♥♥♥♥ Decent retelling
Dragon Ball: Legend of Shen Long/Curse of the Blood Rubies (1986.)

INTRODUCTION:
The Dragon Ball franchise is one of the finest anime series in the world. The series, created as a manga by Akira Toriyama in 1984, has always been popular, and it isn't hard to see why - interesting characters, cool locales, and intriguing plotlines. In addition to the 153 episodes created for the anime, three movies were made as well. Unlike the Dragon Ball Z movies, which were side stories, the DB movies were retellings of the story.

OVERVIEW (RELEASES):
Legend of Shen Long/Curse of the Blood Rubies was released in Japan in 1986. The film was released later on VHS in America, and in an edited format on all Saga of Goku box sets, uncut and edited alike.

OVERVIEW (MOVIE):
This film retells the beginning of the Dragon Ball series. The movie ditches Pilaf as the villain, and replaces him with a gluttonous king who has been transformed from a good man into an evil one through the curse of a mysterious kind of ruby. He has enslaved a kingdom, forcing its residents into mining the rubies. One girl from the village runs away to seek help. Meanwhile, Goku meets Bulma for the first time, as well as several new friends.

REVIEW(MOVIE):
This movie just isn't that interesting, it pains me to say. It tries to do what the anime took thirteen episodes to do - introduce Goku and let him meet all his friends, and enemies who become friends, as well - in a mere forty minutes. This isn't enough time. And as such, the movie seems rushed. The development is weak, and the evil king is a far less-effective villain that the comical-but-still-threatening Emperor Pilaf from the series. I was also disappointed at how little screen time Master Roshi got, and the fact that Ox King and Chi Chi don't even appear. It's worth seeing at least once for the Dragon Ball completist, but don't be expecting anything too special.

The edited version merits further complaints for two reasons. One, it cuts out many of the obligatory mature jokes. Two, it ADDS IN FILLER SCENES! Totally unnecessary, and it makes the movie flow even worse.

OVERALL:
Decent movie, nothing less, nothing more. This one is for die hard fans of the franchise only. Don't come in expecting much.

EDITION NOTES:
This movie has NEVER been released uncut by FUNimation. There's only the edited VHS, and the edited version on Saga of Goku DVDs (EVEN UNCUT REGION 4 SAGA OF GOKU DVDS FEATURE THE EDITED VERSION OF THE FILM.) If you want this uncut, you'll have to import it.
