Laurel & Hardy's best film.
|
| I thought a silent film could not be that good, and could not be better than a talkie. I tried this anyway. To my surprise, this is Laurel and Hardy's best film. It is very funny. Only 20-minutes long; it seems like 5-minutes. It starts slowly, building the plot for a couple minutes, but then takes off, with ever increasing speed. It is worth owning. Though, silent, they have good music. You might think a silent movie would be slow, or require you read a lot of cards, but the good ones, like this one, some of Charlie Chaplin's middle films, and Harold Lloyd's "Safety Last" are not. The writer(s), often Stan Laurel in his films, put a lot of work and skill into action that you understand, just by watching, and at a quick pace, and with a surprising depth of emotion. It is not a talking picture without sound. It is a lost art. Laurel & Hardy's silent, "Soup to Nuts" is funny too; though not quite as good as this. I wish they would put them together on DVD. |
