Compared to the others, Saw IV falls extremely short.

As a fan of the Saw series, I was thrilled to find out that the writers would continue to make more movies even after the shocking ending of Saw III. Eager to find out how the heck Jigsaw's games would continue without Jigsaw, I settled in with a bowl of popcorn and the Saw IV disc in my DVD player. I hate to say it, but I was incredibly disappointed with this one.
I absolutely suggest you rewatch Saw III before watching this one. Had I known that Saw IV was almost directly related to Saw III, I wouldn't have been so darn confused during quite a few scenes in the movie. Obviously, if you haven't seen Saw I and II, watch that first. Because I don't want to give anything away about any of the Saw movies, I won't post a description of what this movie is about.
But let's talk about the positives. Of course we have some of our favorite characters, even the dead ones, making a return to Saw V. And it wouldn't be a Saw movie without a dose of Jigsaw and we get to see a bit of his past in this one. If you like all thing gory, there's a ton of that too. I'm not too squeamish but some of the scenes in this movie were a bit much for me.
As far as the traps/games, they're a bit more simple compared to the traps in the other movies. However, they're still just as excruciating and painful (no pun intended) to watch.
And now for the negatives. You know how in Saw I, II, and III the ending left you shocked and it was completely unexpected? Well, Saw IV leaves you the same way but not in a good way. Talk about a disappointment. Without giving too much away, I'll say that the person who continues Jigsaw's games is no one special. They don't explain why this person is Jigsaw's sidekick which is weird considering that we, as the audience, don't know much about this person nor do we care about this person. Overall, this movie was nothing special and I'm hoping that it's solely acting as a bridge for Saw V.
If you're a fan of the series, I'd watch this just because it's probably a stepping stone for the next Saw so if you want Saw V to make sense, watching this would be beneficial. Just be aware that compared to the other movies, Saw IV is a big disappointment. |
