Not very thrilling, but a unique sequel to "The Warriors"...
|
...so much that you can even see the editing FX that Hill used in this film in the new gussied-up DVD of The Warriors. The idea behind Streets of Fire is hypnotic: an alternate midwestern American reality where Rock and Roll reigns supreme and Elia Kazan melodrama has been kicked into the 1980s. Hence, it's a none-too-subtle Rock N' Roll fable.
At it's best, SOF does in fact a certain lyrical quality and live up to its premise. Unfortunately, it is a very uneven film and the early-80s cheese factor is in full force. Rick Moranis is painfully bad in his role, and Michael Pare has about as much charisma as a day-old roast beef sandwich. But Amy Madigan steals the show with her magnetic performance, and Diane Lane is a wonderful actress. Willem Dafoe doesn't have much to do but he couldn't look more the part.
The story is pretty mediocre, the tension oftentimes nil, but SOF has to be given credit for having no other comparable film, except maybe Hill's previous masterpiece The Warriors. |
