Close the Blast Doors!
|
When the first STAR WARS movie came out in 1977, I saw it in theaters weekly through the first run and eventually noticed that a line of dialogue disappeared from the prints: "Close the blast doors! Close the blast doors!" originally came right before "Open the blast doors! Open the blast doors!" Han Solo made it through the doors right before they closed, leaving the storm troopers trapped behind them. I had laughed along with the rest of the audience, but the humor was removed, in the first sign of tinkering.
How many versions of the film have I owned since then?
-- Panned and scanned Beta tape
-- Panned and scanned CLV laserdisc
-- Panned and scanned CAV laserdisc
-- Widescreen CAV laserdisc from Japan
-- Special edition widescreen CAV laserdisc (in the trilogy)
-- Special edition widescreen partial-CAV laserdisc (in the trilogy)
-- Special edition widescreen DVD
-- Original theatrical version widescreen DVD
That adds up to eight versions so far. Will I go for the Blu-Ray? Of course, I will. I don't have a Blu-Ray player yet, but when STAR WARS (now called STAR WARS IV: A NEW HOPE) comes out then it will be time to make the plunge.
Of the above versions of the film, which would I like to see on Blu-Ray? The original theatrical version, of course. In 1984 during the controversy over colorization the US Congress named STAR WARS as one of a short list of films protected from alteration. So all the tinkering since then has been technically illegal. I would love to hear again the wonderful words "Close the blast doors! Close the blast doors!" |
