Terror lives beyond the door.

Mario Bava is one of the most influential horror filmmakers of all time, he has inspired other directors like Dario Argento and his stylish and creepy cinematic visions can be seen in alot of other Italian horror films so if your an Italian horror fan then you should definitely check out his films. Shock is one of the first Mario Bava films I've seen and I thought it was brilliant he is definitely an expert when it comes to scenes of heightened suspense and terror and thats why hes become a legendary filmmaker, hes made the famous Black Sunday and Black Sabbath which I haven't seen yet but I might check out later.
The film is about a woman played by Daria Nicolodi along with her son and new husband who move back into the country house she once shared with her late husband, there seems to be alot of bad memories for her but she is trying to get past this and move on with her life but all of a sudden her son starts acting weird and it is not known why he is like this until much later when theres is a nasty little surprise which I'm not going to ruin, is the woman insane or is her son really possessed by a vengeful spirit you'll have to watch incase you want find out. The film had some nice twists and turns and had a good and slow build-up until the disturbing ending and I thought that the plot was completely original its very effective with some haunting sequences, there was very little gore and I wouldn't say that I was shocked but I was surprised at the end it was definitely a good one.
I was really impressed with the camera work it had a few neat tricks especially that scene with the ceramic hand sculpture, the only problem I had was with the repetitive music score some of the classical piano piece was good but the rest was a bit dull anyway I didn't think it was that distracting. I have the old Anchor Bay edition so I'm not sure what the special features are for this Blue Underground dvd I'm just glad that they re-released it so more horror fans should check it out, the film was also known to be his last film made before he passed away so it is really important I guess....... |
