♥♥♥♥ If only Paramount had ears, pointy or not...
So the Star Trek cartoons aren't considered "canon," so what? They're wanted, people will pay for them, and some of the stories are actually quite good, even holding their own among the "canon" episodes. We all know how good "Yesteryear" is, with its unique glimpse of Mr. Spock's childhood, but others too, such as "Albatross," in which Dr. McCoy is accused of bringing a plague and put on trial, or "The Survivor," in which a shape-shifting alien has imitated so much of the philanthropist Carter Winston's nature as to even acquire his charitableness. Or how about Star Trek's first Native American crewmember (anticipating Voyager's Chakotay) Walking Bear, as seen in "How Sharper Than a Serpent's Tooth?" "The Lorelei Signal" wonderfully anticipates Voyager's "Favorite Son." Despite the weakness of several other episodes (including several retreads from TOS) there really are some interesting and worthwhile segments here. Is there no one in there aware of what its public wants, and is willing to pay for?
Consider this: for many little ones, the cartoons make the perfect introduction to the whole wonderful world of Star Trek. Those weaned on the 'toons could easily grow up into paying customers of all the other Trek product already out there.
Come to think of it, the Star Trek 'toons aren't the only thing we fans want out here. Several Trek-related core items still await seeing the light of day:
TOS: "Where No Man Has Gone Before" - original pilot version several minutes longer than the aired version and featuring closing credit music heard nowhere else.
TOS: "City On the Edge of Forever" with its alternate music soundtrack as released as a single-episode VHS tape in the 1980's.
TOS: The famous "Blooper Reels" for each of the three seasons.
Other products of Gene Roddenberry's genius: Genesis II, Planet Earth, The Questor Tapes, Spectre, perhaps some of his scripted episodes of "The Lieutenant" "Have Gun Will Travel" or Police Story"?
Picture this: A boxed set of "Gene Roddenberry's Pilots" consisting of his orignal pilot versions for Star Trek (all three, The Cage, Where..., and Farpoint), Assignment: Earth, the above-listed Genesis II...Spectre "made for TV" movie pilots, and who know whatever other television pilots of his may also reside locked away in vaults, unknown.
If anyone out there has any means to communicate word to paramount (and/or whoever else may own some of these) please do humanity a favor and pass this message on to them...
