Let's Get Medieval
|
This is the movie that ushered me into college in the summer of 1994. It's also the first movie that I can recall attending six times over the course of that summer. Never before had I ever returned to the theater for a return engagement to a movie. It was like nothing I had ever seen before and I couldn't get enough of it.
A year later, I would watch the film in my Medieval Lit class and get some more perspective on the film. There is such a rich tapestry of detail present in this film. Jules and Vincent, the two ultra hip knights doing the bidding of their king, Marcellius Wallace. Mia as Guinevere, on display for the troops, the ultimate test of loyalty. we have two betrayals of the loyalty, one by Butch and one by Vincent. Butch saves Marcellius's life, thus earning him his own life, but he pays for his disloyalty with banishment from the kingdom. "You lost all your LA privileges," Marcellius tells him. Vincent betrays Marcellius mentally and pays the price, dying at the hands of Butch. He also ignores the sign from God that Jules sees, returning to his crooked life, thus ensuring his eventual death. And the briefcase? Perhaps it is the Holy Grail, the two hit men knights errant sent to retrieve it by their king. Or it all just might be a really cool gangster flick with great dialog and a kicking soundtrack. You make the call. |
