Don't read the book, you'll just be disappointed in this movie.

I suppose if you've never read Pride and Prejudice this may be a fine film (that's why I gave it two stars instead of just one), but it in NO way does any justice to Jane Austen's novel. Perhaps it's impossible to build the depth of character the way Austen does in a 2 hour movie, but it's because it was only 2 hours long that I was able to even sit through this movie. From the start I was sceptical of Kiera Knightly as Elizabeth Bennett, but in the end it wasn't her performance that disappointed - the whole movie was seriously lacking. Maybe Austen just can't be satisfied in 2 hours, but I was left thinking, That's it? What a sorry tribute to a classic.
This version is FAR inferior to the A&E miniseries (about 5 hours of Eliza and Mr. Darcy) which aired on Masterpiece Theatre and, I felt, illustrated the novel as beautifully as an on-screen adaptation can. If you'd like to see this classic on the screen, make time for the A&E version and forget this one. |
