One or the Other

| This is that rare case of a book (ADDIE PRAY) and this film, based on the book being equally good. That said, if you've read the book, avoid the film and vice versa. I had read the book and had a vision of what the film should be. What Peter Bogdonovich made didn't match what I wanted. The characters are vastly different with Addie becoming almost the leader. (As with many other reviewers, I agree that Tatum O'Neal deserved to be nominated as a "best" rather than "supporting" actress.) Without a scintilla of sentimentality, the film still has enormous warmth, charm and even grace. Unusual in a movie that is essentially about two con artists. (I thought of Borsalino.) So see it, buy it or buy it and read it but not both. Either way it's a treat. |
