♥♥♥♥♥ Almost as many party metal hits as explosions. The full five stars.
Motley Crue are one of the party metal survivors of the 80's, a band so in love with the celebration of decadence that their popularity has actually weathered the storm of the 90's fun police generations. This live documentation of their 2005 tour extravaganza is actually one concert DVD that lives up to it's blurb. For this visual and musical feast is very much an excellent purchase, in fact I'd go so far as to say it's pretty much an essential buy for any fan of the band, even lapsed ones.

My reasons for this statement are;

Firstly the quality of the package. The production qualities are good, the multiple camera angles blend together well and each band member gets a fair share of the attention, and the crowd are also given a lot of camera time as the director Hamish Hamilton has used the crowd participation shots to make this a very inclusive feeling gig. This emphasises the human factor and allows the energy of the event to seep through your sound system and it really is a masterstroke of live DVD production that a two dimensional screen can appear to transmit this much energy.

Secondly apart from some rather predictable stage banter the band are on top form. Now I've no idea how much mini-disc is present here or how many overdubs but having seen this tour on it's Australian leg the band sounded pretty good and so perhaps this is very close to what the audience on the night actually heard, and that deserves credit.

Further the band have played to their strengths yet still found time to slip in a couple of their newer tunes and it's this blend of tunes from across their catalogue that will keep long term fans happy here. Not to mention the massive event of the thing - the stage production here is bigger than Ben Hur with explosions, a great light show, more explosions, trapeze artists/dancers, a midget, a road crew that gets involved during the encore and some more explosions. Not to mention the intro video that the band played prior to going on each night during the tour which is genuinely amusing and not solely a few clichA s of toilet humour - this is definitely a band that can laugh at itself.

More value is added by the second disc which while not earth shattering does certainly add to your understanding of just how massive an undertaking this tour was. Some of the figures bandied about in relation to catering requirements etc. is truly disturbing in a way. All In The Name of Rock n' Roll indeed...

And it's this attention to quality in everything from their stage production, the quality of the spectacle and the desire to add even more value via the second disc of curios that really helps to underscore perhaps why Motley Crue experienced somewhat of a revival of fortunes during the mid noughties - I mean how many bands put on a show like this anymore? My mind boggles at what the insurance premiums for the stage show must of been.

All up a great buy for Motley fans, pretty darn good for general party metal fans too given that this is pretty much the quintessential party metal band performing the quintessential party metal concert.
