♥♥♥♥♥ A study of what lies beneath the surface: literally & literarily
Michael Clayton would be just a well-made corporate thriller, man in limbo over ethical values movie, etc., if it weren't for the touches of dialogue and overlapping cinematic choices that harmonize into a thematic whole. To sum all that up, although the idea of using myth and religous themes is about the number one issue in screenwriting these days, this film has both, but renders them successful by deepening what is on the surface, a movie about bad guys and girls and figuring out along with Michael Clayton, who they are, and what, if anything, should be done about it. It's all set up in the first seven minutes of the film, so it wouldn't be giving too much away to briefly summarize that we hear a frantic voice-over monologue spouting a weird revelation about placentas, afterbirth, organs, etc: literally visceral imagery. Simultaneously, we see a series of shots of the corporate corridors at night: geometric, barren, sterile, inanimate, external. The 'external' of the imagery and the 'inside' of the monologue (btw, the screenwriter/director was originally a playwright), bring to mind a famous tale of the Bible, and the voyage the protagonist goes through. If you went to Sunday school, you probably know the story. And if you watch and listen, you'll see and hear references to that same story. So what's the story? Yea, it's that one. You don't think so? Think again.
