A fairly good collection with only one dud.

This is a collection containing five movies of Lupin the 3rd. Lupin the 3rd is a master thief that can't pass up on a good challenge. He is supported by a charasmatic group of characters that are almost as clever as he is. He is constantly being chased by Inspector Zenigata who will never rest until he brings Lupin to justice.
Lupin the 3rd is an anime chock full of comedy and adventure. Anime fans who are unfamiliar with Lupin should check out the movies first. This way you would know if this franchise is worth your time. The best introduction to Lupin would be Miyazaki's Castle of Cagliostro. That is by far the best Lupin movie. The only problem is, after seeing that one. You could forever be spoiled and all of these would seem average at best(even though most of them are). I'll go briefly into each movie since I already reviewed each of them.
Dead or Alive
Lupin and Jigen barely survive a killer security system. They retreat to an island ran by a despot to find another way to crack the system. An entertaining movie but predictable. 4/5
The Secret of Twilight Gemini
The worst of the collection. This one suffers from very bad writing and fan service is used to cover up the flaws. 2/5
The Pursuit of Harimao's Treasure
Very average movie. Lupin is searching for a statue and he has some competition trying to find it. The comedy made Lupin hard to take serious. 3/5
Dragon of Doom
Pretty well thought out. Good mix of action and comedy, not very predictable and had a good ending. Probably the best in the collection. 4/5
Voyage to Danger
Another nice storyline and the supporting characters are used well here. The dialogue is probably the funniest in this one. 3.5/5
Like I said before this is a nice collection and it's a good intro to Lupin. Don't come into this expecting to see guns blazin' and lots of death. That's not what Lupin is about at all. It's strength is the cleverness, comedy, and its indivdual characters. I don't think all anime fans would enjoy this. But it's worth renting at least. |
