♥♥♥♥♥ Be still, my beating eighties' teenager's heart . . .
My first reaction to this as a high-school girl? Eye-candy overload! Seriously, if there's been a better looking collection of young actors brought together in one film before or since, I would love to see it. This, along with Fright Night, was one of the first vampire/horror films I ever saw, and I still have not outgrown my "taste" for the genre.

Michael (Jason Patric) and Sam (Corey Haim) are brothers who are moving, along with their newly divorced mother (Dianne Wiest) to their grandfather's (Barnard Hughes) California home. Not long after they move, Michael spots a gorgeous black-haired young lady (Jami Gertz) and is immediately taken. However, he is shot down when she is met by a gang of equally gorgeous but tough-looking young men (who we see earlier in the film's opening shot) on motorcycles. She climbs onto the back of the apparent leader, David's (Kiefer Sutherland - Hamina Hamina!) bike and, after shooting Michael a rather smug look, they all ride off.

Meanwhile, his younger brother Sam has wandered into a comic book store and met the Frog brothers (Corey Feldman & Jamison Newlander). They ask him if he has noticed anything "unusual" about Santa Carla and give him a vampire comic book despite his protest that he doesn't like horror comics, with a warning that it could save his life. Sam dismisses them as a couple of weirdos, but not for long.

You see, Michael is continuing his pursuit of his dreamgirl, whose name turns out to be Star. The two meet again on the boardwalk, begin to talk, and are interrupted by the reappearance of Star's male posse. At David's insistence, she once again climbs onto his bike behind him. David then challenges Michael to a motorcycle race, assuring him "You don't have to beat me, Michael . . . just have to try and keep up".

They end up back in a cave that is the gang's apparent hideout, and Michael is put through a kind of "hazing" ritual that ends with him drinking from an old wine bottle containing red liquid.

That's right - it's vampire (specifically, David's) blood, and Michael's transformation begins: Sensitivity to sunlight? Check. Losing his reflection in the mirror? Check. Flying? Check. Animals can sense he's a threat when his new vamp instincts kick in? Check.

All these things finally drive Sam to seek the help of the Frog brothers, who unsuccessfully try to convince him to stake his own brother. Instead, Sam convinces them that Michael is not yet completely transformed (According to this film, you are not FULLY vampirized until you have killed a human and fed, which Michael has not) and that they can still save him if they kill the "head vampire".

But who, exactly, is that? David? Mom's new boyfriend (Edward Hermann)? And can they kill Whoever and save Michael before it's too late for him? Those details, I'll let you watch the movie to find out. Just allow me to reiterate: Eye Candy Overload! Kiefer Sutherland, Billy Wirth, Brooke McCarter, Alex Winter, Jason Patric . . . yep, not a one of 'em not completely yummy. Thought so then, still think so now.

Enjoy.

Cheers.
