Pedestrian first season shows promise with a couple of secondary characters
|
Perhaps I came too late to the "Entourage" phenomenon, but I was only mildly impressed with the first season of HBO's hit comedy series. Certainly I would not put it anywhere near the hallowed heights of HBO's dramatic successes, "The Sopranos," "The Wire," "Rome," or "Deadwood." The characters just aren't compelling enough.
"Entourage" tells a fairly familiar tale of young stardom - too much is received too fast for too little. Vincent Chase (Adrien Grenier) is the current "It Boy" of Hollywood - and he doesn't seem to have any clue how he achieved such success (this ain't George Clooney finally breaking out with "ER" years after his "Facts of Life" minor role). He's got girls, money, and fame coming out the wazoo. So Vince surrounds himself with the titular entourage, and we are supposed to fall for this merry troupe as they navigate Hollywood.
Kevin Connolly plays E, Vince's best friend from childhood. He's the Responsible One. Jerry Ferrarra plays Turtle, a wigger who is strictly there for (attempted) comic relief. If you think wiggers are funny, Jerry's your guy, I suppose. Kevin Dillon saves the day as Johnny Drama, Vince's older brother and B-list actor (perhaps C-list). Of these three, only Drama offers any compelling reason to watch the show as he struggles with his younger brother's fame while trying to revive his flagging career. There are some surprisingly original scenes with Drama, and they are the highlight of the first season.
Also saving the show is Jeremy Piven as Ari Gold, Vince's agent. Ari is essentially a slightly more manic, slightly less cruel version of the movie industry exec played so well by Kevin Spacey in "Swimming With Sharks." He has to represent Vince but has to tolerate Drama, Turtle, and especially E's influence over his prized client. What makes Ari so much fun is the zeal with which Piven throws himself into the role, whether he's trying to salvage a scheduled romantic interlude with his frustrated wife or when he's taking a rival agent down fifteen pegs. Piven is a man to watch, even if we've seen him play Ari Gold in most of his other roles.
"Entourage" has legions of fans, and for more than just the nudity that keeps popping up (especially in the later episodes). It's a funny first season, and it has promise, but I don't think Season One earns the rave reviews that I've seen thrown at it. But give it a chance - at eight half-hour episodes, it's not a major investment of your time or your brain to check it out. |
