the fountains stopped working
|
'La dolce vita' (= Italian for 'sweet-soft life') pictures the decadence of 1961 jet-set life in the city of Rome. The eternal city of Rome, that is, for this movie's extended pace, its styling, as well as its superb quality in acting, directing and picturing, adapt very well to eternity.
Back in 1961 the Roman Catholic Church did not like 'La dolce vita'. Set in strongly Roman Catholic Italy, director Frederico Fellini's theme is critically anti-clerical - to say the least. Which hurts the more as Rome is the residence of the Pope, too.
Much more can be said about 'La dolce vita'. However, I will restrict myself to its immortal highlight: the scene of Marcello Mastroianni and Anita Ekberg in the Trevi-fountains. Located in Rome city centre, these fountains still make one of the city's tourist attractions. When Mastroianni died at December 19, 1996, local authorities stopped them from working for a couple of days. As a gesture of honor. I cannot think of a better way to demonstrate the greatness of 'La dolce vita'. |
