A horror classic
|
The Child's Play or "Chucky" series seems to always get a lot of slack even from the horror community. This is not entirely unreasonable as the first two sequels are clearly meant to be more tongue in cheek, as well as the Bride and Seed of Chucky bordering on flat out self parody, but people forget that this first one really isn't a bad flick. I think the silly sequels are what gave the series a bad rap, because the original Child's Play is a classic.
To make this long story very short and spoiler free, a dying killer uses a voodoo spell to transfer his soul into the body of a nearby doll. The next day a single mother purchases the doll for her young son's birthday. Soon the killer resumes his work now in the form of the doll "Chucky", the young boy being blamed for the murders in turn. Soon Chucky learns that the boy may be his only chance to transfer himself into a living body as he is the first person he revealed his true identity to. However he must act quickly to avoid being trapped inside the plastic body forever. The hunt ensues.
The film is superbly acted from all parties, especially Brad Dourif voicing the killer doll, Catherine Hicks as the mother, and Chris Sarandon as the detective on the case. Considering the year it was made, the puppetry and animatronics are quite well done. At times the doll is clearly being manipulated by a person, or is clearly a stunt double during any scenes with extreme motion, but credit is definietly due to the puppeteers. Add to that an amazing and eerie score, this is a damn good movie for what it is. Child's Play is a horror classic, this is surely one to see. |
